Kevin was spending the weekend with me at my house, as my parents were away. I had a tiny bottle of rum I'd received at SIAF a couple weeks ago. Captain Morgan Parrot Bay strawberry rum, 21% alcohol, 42 proof. I don't really know what that means of course, and my friends who were with me at SIAF said it wasn't much to get buzzed, but hey - free alcohol. I figured I'd give it a try.
So as Kevin and I sat down to watch the Sorcerer's Apprentice at home, I opened the tiny bottle. I tried a sip of the rum straight. It didn't taste terrible; the strawberry flavor was strong and pleasant, but the burn down my throat was noticeable. I could feel my throat tingling and reacting as the liquid slid down to my stomach. The aftertaste was kinda nasty too.
So I grabbed a can of coke, mixed up the drinks in a glass, and grabbed some crackers. Since soda tends to make my stomach churn, I figured the crackers might allow me to drink the whole thing.
Kevin kept telling me I didn't have to drink it all, but I wanted to. I wanted to see what would happen. I was in a safe environment, the drink didn't taste bad, and I wasn't going to waste the chance.
So I drank the whole thing.
And nothing really happened. I didn't feel different. I had a slight headache and felt a little dizzy once in a while, but I'm not sure if that was because of the alcohol. I could still talk just fine. The only difference there might have been is that it felt easier to laugh at the jokes and gags in the movie, but I'm not even sure about that.
I almost found it disappointing, but... *shrugs*
I suppose I learned one thing... I drank some alcohol, and nothing happened. The world didn't end. I didn't go crazy. Sure, the results could be different with some stronger alcohol, but I don't have to be terrified of drinking.
I still don't really want to be a drinker. I still don't find it appealing. But I'm a little curious... Only to the point that if it's free and I can trust the environment I'm in, I might taste it. :P
